Communication Technology Section at UniKL BMI began offering Diploma in Telecommunication Engineering since 2003 and started his Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Data Communication and Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Honors) in Mobile Communications in July 2007. In 2017, both programs are then combined and renamed to Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Telecommunication. The new program was developed in response to the rapid increase in local and international demand for graduate with a solid technical knowledge in this fast moving field.
The programmes were designed to prepare students to position themselves in the forefront of knowledge and technology skills for professional careers in various fields of Telecommunications. The programmes content include the basic knowledge of electrical, electronic and telecommunication systems, signal processing, signal reproduction in physical media and different communication networks. Our programmes consist of a large practical component, at least 60% of the total weight of the credit is dedicated to the guided lab practice.
In addition, the Communications Network module for degree student is customized based on the CISCO Network Academy framework. Therefore upon graduation, our graduates are equipped with Cisco Certified Network Academic Certificate. This certification will provide them with sufficient knowledge to continue to acquire Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) in the future.
The course structure in the Bachelor of Engineering Technology is designed for students to learn and study the telecommunication engineering technology subjects in a smooth progression. During the first 2 years or 4 semesters, the students will learn basic underpinning knowledge in electronics and electrical principles courses and mathematics through courses such as Circuit Theory, Electronics, Network Analysis and Engineering Mathematics. With a strong foundation in these subjects, the student's progress to advanced courses such as Transmission Systems, Electromagnetic Wave, Communication Technology Principles and Network Technology.
They also study Entrepreneurships, Professional and Communicative English which will train them with necessary managerial, entrepreneurial and interpersonal communication skills. In later semesters of Year 3 and 4, the students embark on core discipline courses in the area of telecommunications such as Data Communications, Application Interface Controller, Signals and Systems, Internet Protocols (IP), Wireless Technology, RF Microwave and Antenna, Mobile Communications, Network Management and Network Security.
Students also will undergo industrial training at the end of their academic studies. During the internship they are exposed to working environments, thus gaining valuable experience that will prepare them for employment upon graduation.
Students graduated from our programme have worked in Government Link companies (GLC) such Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Petronas Exploration and Production, Menara TM and in private telecommunication companies such as Maxis Mobile, Celcom Axiata Berhad, DIGI Telecommunications Sdn Bhd and Time Telecommunications as Communications Engineer. They have also found employment in multinational companies such as CISCO, Alcatel, Ericssons, ZTE Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Huawei technologies, Rohde and Schwartz, Schlumberger, NTT Communications, Juniper, IBM among others.
Our students are working as transmission engineer, technical support engineer, project engineer, network analyst, system engineer, system support engineer, network engineer, offshore telco and network engineer, test engineer, assistant manager, radio frequency engineer, product development engineer, wireless product engineer, technologist, IT help desk executive, software specialist, VSAT engineer and enterprise business process and communication executive, among others.
Collaboration with industries
Communication Technology, with collaboration with Cisco Malaysia, has run Cisco networking Academy program since its inception in 2004. This program is suitable for students who are interested in preparing themselves for Cisco Certified Network Associate. The aims of this program are to provide students with an awareness of the breadth of the cisco network profession and develop skills to successfully configure and deploy CISCO devices and other security appliances and technologies used to establish communications and thus the Internet. In addition, the program further aims to produce quality engineers with ethical responsibilities and able to develop their understanding and personal development beyond graduation.

R&D activities in the Communication Technology Section are divided into three clusters:-
1) VoIP, Wireless and Cisco
2) Antenna and Radar, Communication System and Signal processing
3) Optical Communication and Mathematics
Member of the academic staff have been presenting their research work in conferences in Malaysia as well as overseas.
